Nevada Naturalist Program nurtures environmental stewardship in southern Nevada through a combination of education and hands-on engagement.
In southern Nevada, in the face of rapid growth and development, fostering informed environmental leadership is crucial for addressing the pressing need to enhance environmental literacy and protection. Although southern Nevada is known for Las Vegas and its urban experiences, especially for the quality of life for residents, it is imperative to provide education on preserving the environment in southern Nevada, in order to preserve the area’s quality of life.
The Nevada Naturalist Program plays a pivotal role in this endeavor by providing comprehensive environmental training to adult volunteers, known as Nevada Naturalists. Covering diverse topics including cultural history, archeology, paleontology and site stewardship, this program equips individuals to become on-the-ground advocates with specialized knowledge of the various ecosystems, species, habitats and environmental challenges specific to southern Nevada. These dedicated volunteers not only express a genuine concern for the environment but also serve as a valuable resource, contributing to the region's environmental well-being through their education and training. The biannual training program focuses on promoting environmental awareness and protection, and encourages collaboration among Extension, partnering agencies and community members in southern Nevada. Participants receive extensive training on various natural resources topics and are expected to complete an independent project related to the environment before receiving a certificate of completion. In 2023, the program provided two eight-week classes, totaling 100 hours of training sessions consisting of classes, labs and field studies.
All the 27 participants enrolled in the 2023 program received a certificate of completion by attending 70% of the classes and completing a post-test with a 70% or better score. The average overall test score was 95%. In 2023, certified Nevada Naturalists volunteered 2,312 hours, valued at $73,521.60, based on the estimated U.S. 2023 volunteer time value of $31.80 per hour. Since 2008, 357 individuals have been certified and have collectively volunteered over 35,815 hours, contributing an estimated value of $1,138,917. These certified Nevada Naturalists engaged in various projects benefiting southern Nevada, such as supporting restoration management on public lands, collecting essential data, and delivering environmental education and outreach programs. Notable activities included organizing a "Carp Rodeo" to address invasive carp in Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge lakes, participating in a palm clean-up at Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge and actively contributing to National Public Lands Day at the Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park. The program's success is further exemplified by partnerships with organizations, such as the Nevada Department of Wildlife; Clark County Wetlands Park; Red Rock National Conservation Area; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and the National Park Service – Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
By mobilizing dedicated volunteers alongside seasoned professionals, the program fortifies the collective endeavor to preserve the region's natural environment, an important asset often overlooked in the face of tremendous growth and development. In the long run, preserving the region’s natural environment adds to the overall quality of life in the area, contributing to the region’s vitality and economic prosperity.
